Task 2: My Design Career

28th July, 2010

My path to design started when I was still a little kid, while other children show interest other areas, I have clearly shown my interest in the designing area. I loved drawing, and designing new things, which had caught the attention of my parents, teachers and friends, as a child, the feelings that I had was simply amazing, having so many positive comments about my drawings. As I receive a lot of positive feedbacks, my interest in drawing have rapidly increased, my design varies from small things such as toys to big things such as houses. But since I was living in Hong Kong in my early years, which is a city that focus in study, I have very limited chance to express my passion in design.

At the age of 8, I migrated to Australia, and I received a lot of chances to express my passion to design, unlike Hong Kong, I was able to show my creativity in Australia, I was asked to design postcards, posters etc, and the feedbacks I received from teachers and classmates had built up my comfortable in design and drawings. Which becomes one of my free time hobby, I enjoy designing and drawing as I received a lot of fun from it.

As I enter high school, become a designer had become a goal for me, I have studied graphics design for four years, and learnt from fundamental to computer aided drawings, and the achievement I received in graphics design had clearly lead my path to design, but as I learn more and more about design, and look at designer’s design, I had time when I lose my confident, and doubt I will be able to do designs at a level where everyone will accept. But I was able to regain my confident after the HSC.

Before I choose Industrial Design at UNSW, I had to choose between architecture, Interior design, architecture computing and industrial design. But look at my past, I realize the thing I enjoy the most is to create new things, therefore the obvious choice was industrial design. These are the reason I want to become a designer, and studying industrial design in UNSW is now a start for my design life.

For future, I wish to become a product designer, which everyone wants me to design for them. But as I understand that the road to design isn’t easy, so I would like to work in any design industry to gain designing experiences and work for a product design company in future, ultimately start my own brand.

  2. Your journey in becoming an industrial design is inspiring as moving from Hong Kong to Australia assisted your chances in becoming something great as well as highlighting to the world your talent in drawing. This is admirable.
